What do you want from a good bicycle helmet?

Without a doubt we can say that the helmet is the most important safety element and that is why we must make sure to choose one that adapts perfectly to each of us. When buying it we can take into account different characteristics such as comfort, ventilation, aerodynamics...
Helmet measurements
Most brands use the S-M-L system to describe helmet size. Each of these sizes includes measurements in centimeters, which may vary from one brand to another.
To know the measurement of our helmet we only have to measure our skull at the height of the forehead, just above the eyebrows (which is the position that the helmet will occupy). At the time of use, it is advisable not to tighten it more than necessary, as it can cause headaches.
Security before everything
In the case of the European Union, there are a series of approvals and certifications that every helmet must pass to be effectively safe. More specifically, any cycling helmet sold in community territory must be approved to the European Directive 89/686/EEC, this approval is achieved thanks to the EN1078 certification.
EN 1078 is the code you should look for on the helmet packaging along with the CE symbol to ensure the helmet meets European standards.
And the prices?
As long as they respect minimum safety measures, each brand is free to add the desired innovations to each of the helmets. The prices from one to another vary depending on the material with which it is made. For example, road and MTB helmets are made with polystyrene on the inside and polypropylene on the outside.
The fact of using materials such as graphene, integrating retention systems or the lightness of the product is also a factor that makes the product more expensive.
Ventilation and comfort
Ventilation is a key point. On the one hand, we can look at the number of 'gaps' through which the air will enter and which, therefore, will serve to cool us. However, it is not so much the quantity but the quality (good air conduction inside).
Trick! A trick to determine if a bike helmet has a good ventilation system is to look at it from the front, placing the helmet between us and a colored wall. If when looking at it we can see the color of the wall through the holes, it means that the air has well-designed holes both to enter and exit, thus ensuring a correct flow of wind.
On the other hand, comfort is something very subjective but we can orient ourselves based on the padding of the helmet, the support or the accessories it includes.
What kind of cyclist are you?
Not all cyclists are the same, neither are helmets!
In the case of road or MTB helmets, the same style of helmet is currently used interchangeably: highly ventilated, light and more or less aerodynamic.
For cyclists 'against the clock', the ideal helmet is one that is very aerodynamic, with little ventilation and with a screen.
For the most extreme MTB (enduro) practices, a much more enveloping helmet with a greater weight, neck protection and visor is used.
